USPS was playing in front of the HQ at 846 Union Street at our weekly Sunday open air jam and who else but Joe Russo showed up to watch us. In honor of this I thought I would give a plug to the Furthur Festival at Mountain Aire that is happening this summer, it is looking to be great. Sammy's blog has more.

Wanderlust Comes to Kula Yoga in NYC

This studio is a great for pushing you further, albeit trendy and "coola" it gets credit. I might do a review on Wanderlust and stay at my friends house nearby.

Wanderlust at KULA Yoga

Saturday, March 20, 2010

28 Warren St.

New York, NY 10007

This Saturday we are throwing you a little Wanderlust party. Be there 8ish. Drinks, DJs... and you do not want to miss the largest game of Twister in NYC history.

(Mistress Alex in a gold lame jumpsuit spinning the wheel and administering lashes and prizes.)

The Ohio Party throw down an old skool style danceparty. And vamp it for a photo that may show up on the Wanderlust site... this could be the night that makes you famous. (Tandem class at 6 is full, but you can always drop in to the 6pm Kula Flow instead.)

If you haven't heard of Wanderlust, the festival is best described as a world-class yoga retreat crossed with a music festival, all set in the glorious natural scenery of Squaw Valley USA in North Lake Tahoe. For those who can't wait until July 29, Wanderlust at Kula gives you the essence of it at an intimate level.

Wanderlust brings a little taste of its summer festival to Tribeca to celebrate the equinox. After a long New York winter, come usher in Spring with a music-infused vinyasa class, an extreme session of Twister and a much-needed dance party at Kula Yoga Project. The evening kicks off with a tag team vinyasa class featuring 3 awesome Wanderlust teachers --- Virayoga's Elena Brower, Yoga Tree SF's Janet Stone, and Kula mama Schuyler Grant. Guitarist John Shannon and bassist Garth Stevenson will provide the musical inspiration. After class, grab a glass of wine or jump into Extreme Twister --- an instant classic from Wanderlust 2009. Open hamstrings a plus, competitive lust a must. There will be prizes to inspire a yogic state of equanimity.

Stormy Monday

In honor of the Allman Brothers run at the Palace here is my take on the song Stormy Monday.

At Ananda Ashram on my yogic journey I jammed and was schooled by fellow musician David Ellenbogen, being a jazz musician he taught me about different jazz progressions. particularly tritonal substitutions and other substitutions. Knowing that I love the blues he taught me how these sorts of substitutions are incorporated into the song "Stormy Monday", made famous (to me at least) by the Allman Brothers and Written by T-Bone Walker. I love the extra jazz chords such as the Am, Bm♭and B, at the turnaround to D. I was listening to this great music theorey podcast and it basically stated that nowhere in music theory will you find this Bm♭ in this sort of 1-4-5 progression. That's why the blues is so cool and mystical, it is based on emotion,so all sorts of messy notes work, major scales minor scales, and edgy dissonant notes that seem out of place but it just work so good.

Sara Bouchard: Songs of Lewis and Clark

Sara Bouchard is a Brooklyn based artist with an eccentric stroke of genius and is in keeping with this blog's partial, new theme of the back to the land movement and sustainability. The Lewis and Clark project is like nothing I ever heard with entire songs taken from the journals of America's greatest adventurers. The stories grab a hold of you and transport you to a different time and place, when the choices of survival and adventure took immediate precedence over Coke or Pepsi.

"Songs of Lewis & Clark" is a song cycle setting the journals of Lewis and Clark to music. With lyrics taken directly from the journals, the songs reveal moments of awe, reflection, humor and joy during the course of the 1804-1806 expedition through the newly purchased Louisiana territory. The full-length album was released November 23, 2008."

Wagon Wheel USPS

Here is the USPS Trio's version of Wagon Wheel

The song has an interesting history, the chorus of the song, which is arguably the best part was written by Bob Dylan for the album Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. Old Crow Medicine Show then wrote the verses and made it a hit.
