EOTO, Break Science & Lynch tonight!

A night of side projects, trip-hop, drum&bass and jam&funk..

10:30 pm
EOTO- Percussionist and drummer from The String Cheese Incident, Jason Hann and Michael Travis are back at Sullivan Hall tonight with their breakbeat trip hop project EOTO. What makes an EOTO performance so special is that every set is 100% improvised-- meaning they create the music, record, mix and remix live on the spot.

Experiencing Hann and Travis perform in EOTO is much different than seeing them in SCI. Hann is on the drum kit, percussion and sampler, and Travis plays the tonal elements of the music bass, guitar, keys and live mixing.

This will be a night full of exceptional talent, featuring various side projects and collaborations, and definitely a good night for the dancing crowd. Check out these bands early...

9:00pm
Break Science, one of the funk/jazz/hip hop drummer Adam Deitch's latest brainchild. The band features NY based musicians, sidemen and producers of bands like the Fugees, G-Unit, and Matisyahu. Break Science describes the music as trip-hop, broken beat, dub, drum & bass & hiphop.

8:00pm
Lynch returns! Lynch features Jim Loughlin of moe. on drums. The band describes themselves as being a result of friendships formed in upstate NY's jam scene over drink tickets, double bills and the love of James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and the Beastie Boys. Jam/Funk/Hip Hop kicks off the night.

CoSM Update

Aristotle spoke of art as a form of emotional catharsis.
If done effectively, it engages the viewer/audience/participant
In a drama of emotional flow and dynamism
Potentially pushing us to states of ecstasy
Where the mind of the performer and the mind of the witness
Dissolve in a sense of co-creative aesthetic wonder,
A melding of opposites
Where the viewer alters their consciousness
To momentarily adopt the world view of the artist,
Who is momentarily One
With the Creative Source,
The Force that powers the galaxies.

At this time of year our hearts are bursting with gratefulness for the angels who have flown into CoSM over the past year to help us in this most transitional and exciting moment in the adventure of building sacred space together.

NYC Taper CMJ Showcase

CMJ is kind of stupid with most of the bands being soulless. They have sold out. The NYC Taper showcase is cool though. This guy is awesome because he busts his ass making it to different shows for your listening pleasure. Then he puts it on a blog. Hug a Taper! He also supports very small and upcoming bands another very cool thing, almost all the bands he promotes are not very well known and he serves as one of their biggest methods of exposure. You can check out NYC Tapers very own Showcase here

Sublime Reunion Sparks Law Suit

Sublime is an amazing band with a troubled legacy, in addition to serving as the soundtrack to every mediocre frat boy bar band since 1997, there have also been heated legal battles regarding use of the name “Sublime.” This past year Sublime bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Floyd “Bud” Gaugh have been reuniting with, a new front-man, Rome Ramirez, referred to simply as “Rome.”

This past Saturday shortly before the band was to play it’s first large event at the Cypress Hill Smokeout, the estate of deceased singer Bradly Nowell released a statement threatening legal action, forbidding the trio from playing under the title Sublime. while some feel the surviving members of the band are entitled to use the name to help their careers and bring joy to fans, others argue that Bradly Noell would not have wanted it. Noells family argues that Bradly would not want the band to perform in this quote. “Out of respect for Brad’s wishes, we have always refused to endorse any group performing as ‘Sublime,’ and now with great reluctance feel compelled to take the appropriate legal action to protect Brad’s legacy”

Letters were exchanged between the Surviving members and the Estate, which can be read here. There is nothing short of an all out war right now on the internet between the two camps, this can be seen on the estate controlled “official” Myspace and Bud and Eric’s page.

Their new album, How I Got Over, was recently pushed back and is now due out Feburary 2010 on Def Jam records.
The first single from the album is also called How I Got Over and the video debuted last week (
http://videos.onsmash.com/v/jzLUmJUVausjmsZN)

Opening was a group called Pattern Is Movement a band that has played many jam sessions before. A two man band featuring Andrew Thiboldeaux (vocals/keys) and Chris Ward (drums). They were joined by The Roots for their only two songs of the night. With a voice comparable to Cee-Lo, Thiboldeaux belted out “Crazy In Love,” a Beyonce cover that had some of the crowd scratching their heads at first. The crowd eventually started to catch on, unable to resist the pure energy exuded by the band. This was followed with a cover of D’Angelo’s “How Does It Feel?.” Pattern left the stage with a worked crowd ready for the rest of the jam.

Without any break The Roots remained on stage and transitioned into some smooth guitar from “Captain” Kirk Douglas. Questlove’s heavy drum beat kept everything moving into an unreleased song. Root's front man Black Thought came out with a vengeance, setting the mood by tearing up the stage with his rhymes and charismatic body language. Often referred to as the “Grateful Dead of hip/hop,” The Roots, much like the Dead, have a few unsung heroes in their lineup. Keyboardist James Poyser and bassist Owen Biddle really bring a lot to the table when it comes to performing live. The jazz of Poyser, works great when improvising and Biddle’s bass is as steady as they come, often taking phrases from classic soul and rap songs.

Dirty Projectors and The Roots Brooklyn Bowl?

The Dirty Projectors have been touring with a constantly shifting line up for the better part of the last decade, it has just been in the past year that they have tapped into the internet hype machine which has launched their careers and has helped them gain the very public support of Bjork, David Byrne and now Jimmy Fallon.

The other night The Dirty Projectors debuted a new song "When The World Comes To An End" (formerly titled "Until The Day I Die") on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The band impressed the room with their vocal acrobatics and were instantly asked to return to the show by the host.

"When The World Comes To An End" was one of the six songs in the suite The DPs composed for Bjork, and one of the few that didn’t feature her on vocals.

Before the taping, members of the Roots and The Projectors were hanging out. ?uestlove had his video camera ready to record a performance by the human Casio’s now famous, vocal magic trick.

In the video ?uestlove mentioned that on Thursday they will be at Brooklyn Bowl, the new Willamsburg venue started by former Wetlands Preserve owner Peter Shapiro. Since The Projectors are from Brooklyn, Captain Kirk, the guitarist for The Roots, said “you can totally come up onstage and do what you just did.”

The Wackness and Uncle Nev

I had a dude I went to in high school called "Uncle Nev? He was just like Method Man in the Wackness. I rediscovered this movie and it reads very similar to my junior year of HS.

"Hey Alex turn off your brakes lights you want to get me knocked?!"
