October brings Residencies to Sullivan Hall

I always look forward to residencies at local NYC venues for the opportunity they provide fans to really get to know a band or an artist-- to see the same artist in the same room with different guests and in different moods each night. Sullivan Hall is hosting 2 residencies this month. One with Chris Barron, formerly lead singer of the Spin Doctors, and one with New Orleans brass/funk/rock legends Bonerama.

Chris Barron is known as lead singer of the Spin Doctors, writer of hits like "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" and "Two Princes". Since his Spin Doctor days, he's become somewhat of an east village legend, frequently showcasing new tunes at local clubs and playing with friends like John Popper and Mike Gordon.

Chris will be performing with special guests each night
. The venue says to expect a high level of talent, some old friends, and some new acts.

Check him out on Wednesdays, starting tomorrow: September 30th, October 7, 14, 21st.

Bonerama will funk Sullivan Hall's stage on Friday nights throughout Rocktober. October 2, 9, 14th, & 16th. The band is hitting the North East hard this month with 3 residencies- in Boston, Burlington, and at Sullivan Hall in NYC.

This is not your average brass band. Their tunes range from rock to funk to jazz to big brass band and right back to rock again. They won The 2007 Big Easy Award for Best Rock Band and just released a new EP today. Lots of exciting stuff for Bonerama... Here's what you'll find at each residency date:

10/2 - Advanced ticket buyers are invited to meet&greet prior to showtime
10/9 - Ivan Neville of Dumpstaphunk is special guest all night
10/16 - George Porter Jr. of The Meters special guest all night
10/23 - Part of CMJ, with SociaLybrium.

More info can be found on Sullivan Hall's website

Weekend of Birthdays

Go Libra! You are affable and social, people like you! Happy Birthday to Robyn Gould, Patron Saint of the NYC jamband scene, Squidda is a pretty tight band that played her 40th birthday and took some awesome double lead guitar solo's. Happy birthday to my best buddy Conor as well and Tara, who's birthday at the hipster Brooklyn party house was pretty much awesome. Big up to Crazy Dan and DJ Trent from Sound and Safe ( WFMU) for spinning some top 80's crack that make my ears bleed. Though for some reason I enjoy that when there are really pretty girls dancing.

Thursday

Maylene and The Sons of Disaster, Rick Astley, Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster, From Sword To Sunrise, and Hail The Villain

I caught these bands at the Fillmore last night, I like Maylene because they meld metal and southern rock/slide and banjo. This was the first time I saw a "Circle Pit", or basically some form of mosh pit. Crazy. The bands all took lots of legato laden solo's which being an improv rock fan I loved. Metal actually doesn't suck.

CoSM Update

Dear friends,
This past week marked the first anniversary of CoSM in the Hudson Valley. It has been a year of upheaval, orientation and transformation. Within this year, CoSM has activated the end of one era and launched a new phase. CoSM in Manhattan was a five-year experiment we often called "the living brochure," meaning that we wanted to see if a sacred space exhibiting the art of Alex Grey and other visionary artists could sustain a presence with support from a community. The answer was a resounding "YES!" In the final weeks in the Manhattan location, record numbers of visitors streamed into the galleries so as not to miss Phase One of CoSM -- the living brochure.

On our first anniversary we look back on this year filled with struggles and so many blessings. At our new home in the Hudson Valley, there is still so much building and improving ahead, even after an intensive year of massive renovations on the office, shipping department, studios, and guest house (including a cafe, dining hall and store). Extraordinary, devoted staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly to make CoSM structures welcoming. CoSM has been experiencing metamorphosis, transforming from a cabaret/gallery environment in the city to a tranquil spiritual art retreat center. Full moon ceremonies are better than ever with our added ability to SEE A MOON! And stars... And trees.... And gaze into fire. Consider joining us for an upcoming event or workshop and if you cannot, please gaze at the moon with us wherever you are and send a loving thought to CoSM. Pray with us that the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors will manifest as an enduring and uplifing sacred site. Now in Phase Two, the most important and exciting project is on the horizon -- the creation of a new installation of the Sacred Mirrors art collection, making this precious body of work once again available to everyone.
If you are moved by this vision consider becoming a monthly donor. Monthly donors are the financial family of CoSM, people who take a stand every month to support this vision. Your support is needed now. Thirty dollars each month, just one dollar a day from all who have been touched by this project, can create a financial ground on which to build a sacred site. Another way to support CoSM is to purchase gifts from our new online store. Sharing CoSM gifts with loved ones means sharing a vision of creative spirit. All proceeds from the store support CoSM.

This is a New Year for many people. It is the start of the school year. It is the beginning of the Jewish lunar calendar. It is a time of assessment and commitment to our ideals and to fulfilling our dreams. Blessings on your creative path. Thank you for opening this message and caring about what is going on at CoSM. Co-create with us the realization of sacred space by visioning this dream into being.

Love,

Alex and Allyson

Douche Alert: Pink Shirt

This guy is a douche, he punched a dude out of nowhere and is sucking a balloon right in front of Carnegie hall! He gives decent meat heads a bad name!

and "just shat myself" bro right next to him is the man!

Wednesday

Benny Gilbert @ Sunnys Redhook

I was playing music at Sunny's tonight and there was an incredible musician passing through town, Benny Gilbert. He may be the best overall musician I had come across in a long while, and there are a lot of amazing musicians around Redhook/Park Slope/Brooklyn. I backed him up on slide for a little bit and let me tell you, it sounded so sweet. The room was hypnotized, he travels a lot but is based out of MN and NY. He made the hipsters in the room heads explode! Here is just some random video on him, I think it's all that's really out there, and doesn't really do justice.

Seed Gallery: PSYCHOTROPIA

This is one of the only visionary art galleries in NYC, kind of an offshoot of the Alex Grey scene in NJ where the rent is reasonable, accessible by train.

Seed Gallery’s Two Year Anniversary Art Exhibition

Group Show, Curator: Kaliptus & Gizem Bacaz

September 24th- November 13, 2009

Opening Reception: September 24th

between 5pm-8pm, Silent Auction at 8pm!

Psychotropia will be taking place on September 24th, 2009 at Seed Gallery, which is located on 239 Washington St. in Newark, NJ. This awesome celebration of Seed’s two-year opening anniversary & psychotropic art exhibition is guaranteed to be one of our best yet. The theme of “psychotropia” reflects the mind, revealing its deeper nature and its infinite aspects of the psyche. The art that will be displayed from September 24th until October will be psychotropic in that it will bring our audience closer to their deeper mind. The content of the works are mind revealing and can be considered to express mystical states of consciousness, shamanic experiences, visionary states of the mind, etc. Our goal is to bring together an impressive array of artists, who’s art forms not only deliver quality in content and design but also act as a portal for spiritual exploration, inspiration, healing, and psychotropic research.

Claudia Lady Bird Johnson once said, “Art is the window to man's soul. Without it, he would never be able to see beyond his immediate world; nor could the world see the man within.” Art is meant to elevate one’s understanding of himself and the world around him, instantaneously taking him/her into a higher level of consciousness. In “Psychotropia” we will be creating a unique and awe-inspiring environment that is meant to transcend the self beyond the beyond. Art works will vary from paintings to sculptures, to digital prints, collages, installations, animations, and much, much more. Imagine entering the gallery and stepping into an entirely different universe where one can explore multiple realities uncommon to day-to-day reality. Hues of bright and fluorescent tones intertwined in archaic myths with psychedelic gods and archetypal techno demons might be some of the themes displayed in some of the more expected pieces. But be prepared to also expect the unexpected.

Feedback installations with interactive devices and video projects might just melt your mind and blow you away. We are also expected to have synesthetic animations that vibrate trance evoking, audio frequencies and optical phenomenon so astonishing that you might never forget.

If you are inspired by eidetic imagery, visionary art, mandalas, sacred geometry and surrealism don’t hesitate to stop by for our opening night. This upcoming show’s artists will bring to you some of the most exciting aggregations that may resemble many of Carl Jung’s collective archetypes or the powerful hypnagogic states of a Tibetan Buddhist Monk.

Douche Alert! Neck Tatoos

Neck Tatoos are one of the Douchiest things around right now. I keep meeting people with them, my friend Chad has one, which is itself a douche name. If your really just doing this to further your acting/music/modeling career, what are you going to do when these go out of fashion, in say...1/12 years? Most of these dudes are tough but whenever you take a piss they are the ones doing their hair for 10 minutes! You my Midwestern transplant friends, reign as king in The Kingdom of Douche!

CoSM Update- Kuten La Visits CoSM

Many of us have heard the story about the origin of the label "Indians" given to native Americans by the earliest European settlers. The story we've been told was that Christopher Columbus, an Italian, funded by the Spanish Queen Isabella, was searching for a shorter Indian trade route and mistakenly found his way to the New World. Confused about the land they had found, these explorers believed that they had arrived in India and named the native people Indians. Recently in New Mexico, our friends told us that this presumption had been seriously questioned. The corrected interpretation was that the first Europeans to set foot on American soil were describing the native people as "En Dios" or "In God." En Dios were people living in tune with nature and the Divine. All activities and motivations were dedicated to the Holy Spirit, all effects of the physical world were attributed to the will of the Creator.

CoSM is being reborn in the land the Wappanni people once called their home. At the last Full Moon ceremony, Evan Pritchard introduce himself, and it soon became known that he was a leading authority on the people that called themselves Wappanni, and the author of numerous books that included their history. Evan informed us all that the Hudson River indeed had a name before Henry Hudson, and that name was Mough-hikan-etuch [Mo - Hee - Kan - ee - Took]. Mo means greatest or supreme; hikan means arm of the sea or sea water; and etuch means ebbs and flows or flows both ways. One of the amazing things many do not know about the Hudson River is that it is a tidal river that changes its direction four times each day. This year is the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage up and down his eponymous river. Acknowledgment is overdue to the indigenous people of the region and it is a good time to familiarize ourselves with their names and their ways.

On Sunday, October 11th, "Altered State," the twenty-eight foot domed sculpture by Kate Raudenbush, will be celebrated gracing a meadow at CoSM. This structure of laser cut cold rolled steel, seen from a distance, looks like lace, while on closer inspection, the symbols of native American peoples create cut out patterns in the curved white powder coated walls. A centerpiece for many future CoSM ceremonies, "Altered State" is meant to honor the art and spirit of the native ancestors of America.

On to the Next One: Blueprint 3

Hip hop has been in a sorry state, luckily this old head Jay-Z still makes good and original rap. His 9-11 benefit is at MSG this Friday, I can see the garden from my window and it's gonna be busy with huge as trucks pulling up all day as people get ready for it.

what I'm trying to say is that in 20 years no one will remember who Lil' Wayne is.

The Masterminds

These guys went to school with my sister at Wesleyan (same school as MGMT and Heylady), I used to rock this tape in back in college until I wore it out. They had one of the best underground rap LPs of all time which are all on their Myspace page. "Seven" features El-P, J-Live and Shabaam Sahdeeq and Mr. Lif . Nowadays El-P is playing festivals like Bonnaroo and Mr. Lif is playing with Galactic.

Who is BNE?

this guy.

BNE is a contemporary artist specializing in graffiti who has become world famous. I heard that some hollywood actor, george clooney commisioned him to paint a wall in his house in italy.

Basically his "art" is shit, and he needs to get a life.

Railroad Earth Nokia Theatre

It’s no surprise that the band Railroad Earth took their name from Jack Kerouac’s flowing prose-poem, October in the Railroad Earth. Interspersed with memories of the past and the present, the story weaves a complex tapestry of impressions and reflections, all underlining the American history of the workingman. Much like Kerouac, Railroad Earth’s music captures the grit and soul of rural and urban America and translates it into something deeper than just music.

The six-piece ensemble crafts each song artfully, like a storyline in a novel about travel, wonderment, tragedy, and heartbreak. With the unusually soulful and deep writing and vocal delivery of principal songwriter, Todd Sheaffer, combined with instrumentation so colorful you might find them on the Appalachian Trail, Railroad Earth is bringing their slice of American culture on a hefty fall/winter tour spanning both coasts and every major market in between.

Mixing an unlikely blend of instruments to make up their well-traveled sound, the project features Todd Sheaffer (Lead vocals, acoustic guitars), Tim Carbone (Violin, vocals), John Skehan (Mandolin, vocals), Andy Goessling (Acoustic guitars, banjo, dobro, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle, saxophones and vocals), Carey Harmon (Drums, hand percussion, vocals) and Johnny Grubb (Upright bass).

In their relatively short tenure, the band has released five critically acclaimed albums and amassed an impressive national following with sold-out shows from coast-to-coast. They’ve also graced the main stages of some of the country’s most prestigious festivals, including; Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rothbury and the 10,000 Lakes Festival. And this past September, Railroad Earth performed for the first time at the legendary amphitheater, Red Rocks, in Morrison, CO. Yet, Railroad Earth remains surprisingly grounded and continues to stick close to their musical roots and influences – always striving to keep the next show is as inspired as the last.

Beginning in late September, Railroad Earth will be doing a series of short tours with pivotal performances in various parts of the country. But unlike the speed trains in Kerouac’s novels, this Railroad Earth is in no hurry “to get there fast”.
