New Velvet Underground Book

The Velvet Underground has recently been getting more attention, as indie rock has climbed to pop status. Indie rock is only one of many genres influenced greatly by the VU, but like a famous painter they never saw much success when they were out there doing it. The story of NYC’s original hipsters is now chronicled in an illustrated book by Voyager Press, The Velvet Underground: An Illustrated History of a Walk on the Wild Side.

The book features 304 pages of unreleased photographs of the band's first live show, Andy Warhol's artwork, underground press clipping, flyers and original band reviews. For the obsessed fans there are reprints of Lou Reed's handwritten music and excerpts from Andy Warhol's memoirs. There is also conversation recorded for the book between lead guitarist Lou Reed and violinist John Cale. Dummer Maureen Tucker tops it off by contributing her own writings to the project.

The Velvet's franchise legacy is pale in comparison to the massive, money making empires of their 1960's contemporaries, staying true beatniks to the very end. Besides The Velvet Underground Box Set Peel Slowly And See, the illustrated book is the first to offer a behind the scenes look at these illusive rock icons. The book sells for about $24 so even PBR drinking art school drop outs can afford one a copy.

John Brown's Body Bowery Ballroom- September 11th,

This is a pretty good reggae band, they're working hard making a name for themselves and playing a good variety of festivals, getting reggae more into the mainstream. An important thing, and into ears of weak minded indie rock fans.

The Black Seeds will be opening for John Brown's Body at 11 shows from September 10th - 25th. Touring in the US for the first time this Wellington, NZ-based band fuses dub, funk, and soul, with a classic reggae base.

A message from CoSM

Hildegard of Bingen, a 12th c. Abbess and Visionary, wrote of "veriditas," the greening power of Nature as the physical manifestation of God's love and life-renewing spirit. The group souls of all growing things conjoin to form a subtle energetic creative healing environment.

The glorious green of Summer has blessed our first events at CoSM! First, a welcoming tour for our neighbors, a members Full Moon, and then Alash, our musical friends from Tuva, presented an amazing concert in the library of the Main House. We do hope you will enjoy each remaining day of this season and join us for our first Full moon Ceremony open to the public, Friday, September 4th, details follow.

This summer, CoSM's contractors and volunteer builders have been busy with massive renovations in the Main House, the building of CoSM's Studio, and the beginning of our Wisdom Path through the woods. Come to the Full Moon and other CoSM events, see the progress and hear about the plans.

Fall is a new beginning in many traditions, like a second New Year. At CoSM Art Sanctuary we look forward to our first season of fall colors. "The Mission of Art" is the first course planned for CoSM's Core Curriculum, and promises to empower the alliance between spirituality and creativity for each participant. In October, a workshop entitled," Nature Mysticism" will encourage drawing and painting from the microCoSM to the macroCoSM, from the cellular structure visible through a microscope to a leaf, to a tree, to the greater landscape.

The installation of "Altered State" a 28 foot sculpture by Kate Raudenbush, will provide a beautiful centerpiece in the CoSM meadow, an excellent focal point for many events including beautiful outdoor weddings. Mark your calendars for the opening ceremony, now scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, October 11th.

Love and extraordinary visions,

Alex and Allyson Grey

Allman Brothers NYC Tour: CMAC - Jones Beach

I'm almost ashamed to post these pictures of the shitty video we took at the Widespread/Allman Brothers show. But it's what I got, oh yeah, for better or worse the tanks were out in full effect, everyone seemed to be on their best behavior though, as we all have the internet now, even goons and wooks. Next up Nikon at Jones Beach tomorrow night.

CECIL TAYLOR Produced by Jill Newman Productions

Monday, August 31

As part of The Highline Piano Series

life simply does not submit itself to the ordinary rules of program biography. Some facts: he was born in Long Island City in 1933. It is recorded that in his early years, the artists he admired included Fats Waller, Erroll Garner, and especially, Bud Powell. His mother grew up in New Jersey and was a childhood friend of Sonny Greer. Therefore, Duke Ellington's influence in the Taylor household was pervasive. He has just completed a new piece for Diane McIntyre's dance company, Sounds in Motion. The work will premiere in New York in early May as part of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre's New York season.

Allman Brothers NYC Tour

In Honor of the Allmans Passing through. and the fact that I talked to Gregg in my dream last night. Here is a recording of a very rarely performed Gregg Allman Song. I was chilling outside a venue where the tour bus was parked and Gregg was out there just chilling cause he was kind of lonely and wanted to talk to some journalists. We talked and he blew my mind with some spiritual philosophy, it was very deep. He was looking kind of sick and old, like he has been recently. This was in the same spirit as the dream I had playing slide in a swamp with Duane. Though I never have or will chilled with Duane before. Rest his soul.

Here's one for the Deadheads...

Donna Jean Godchaux, the only female member ever in the Grateful Dead, has been making her way around the country this summer with her new band, Donna Jean Godchaux Band featuring Jeff Mattson. Playing at Festivals like GOTV and the upcoming Grateful Dead fest, the band will be heading to Sullivan Hall this Friday, August 21st.

Donna Jean sang with the Grateful Dead from '71-'79, joining her husband and keyboardist Keith Godchaux. You can check out a video of the boys (and girl) performing Scarlet Begonias in '77 here.

Aside from her run with the Grateful Dead, Donna Jean played with the Jerry Garcia Band, Heart of Gold Band, and appeared on tracks such as Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" and Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman." Jeff Mattson, guitarist, is also the lead guitarist of Long Island's legandary Grateful Dead influenced jamband, The Zen Tricksters.

They'll be performing some soulful originals, and of course, a whole lotta Grateful Dead favorites... so take the trip and check em out.

U-Melt Sullivan Hall

Here is a picture of the set list. U-Melt (great band bad name). They played a great "Get Down On It"( Kool and The Gang) and they jammed with Jim Loughlin from .moe who they split the bill with.

brought out a tank, and I was really skeptical until I found out it was just a guy trying to support his family and the whole organized thing was just a fantasy. It was going all night even while a complete brigade of mounted cops passed by. Trotting down the street.

Trouble and Bass No Escape from New York

These dubstep originators will be putting on another cultural event, with so called "head bangers" I wish Math Head was still playing with them, but he's doing his own thing. It's cool these guys got some recognition from Scion, with all the heavy marketing they are doing on their Cube car on all the cool blogs. Scion has this make your own Dubstep widget thingy and it's cool seeing the recognize hometown heros T&B.

NYC and Pot Users

By Scot Morgan

One of the most pernicious lies in the marijuana debate is that police aren't aggressively working to arrest people for small amounts of pot. They are. Although there are parts of the country where marijuana is a low priority for police, there are also places like New York City, where police have developed finely tuned mechanisms for arresting and convicting as many minor marijuana offenders as humanly possible.

What makes New York City's epic war on marijuana so remarkable is not just the staggering number of arrests (more than any other city on earth), but the despicable methods that are used to achieve that result. First, police must work their way around the fact that 1) possession of small amounts of marijuana is decriminalized in New York and 2) the 4th Amendment forbids searching people against their will without evidence of a crime.

Basically, the program consists of stopping large numbers of people (primarily young black and Hispanic men) for no reason and then saying this:

"We're going to have to search you. If you have anything illegal you should show it to us now. If we find something when we search you, you'll have to spend the night in jail. But if you show us what you have now, maybe we can just give you a ticket. And if it’s nothing but a little weed, maybe we can let you go. So if you’ve got anything you’re not supposed to have, take it out and show it now.”

When police say this, the young people usually take out their small amount of marijuana and hand it over. Their marijuana is now "open to public view." And that – having a bit of pot out and open to be seen – technically makes it a crime, a fingerprintable offense. And for cooperating with the police, the young people are handcuffed and jailed. [Alternet]

Amazingly, you're not actually guilty of a crime until you attempt to cooperate with police. It is literally the act of showing them your stash that is a violation of the law and everything they say up until that point is designed to trick you into doing that. As is so often the case, policing in the war on drugs consists of tricking people into breaking the law so that the law can then be enforced.

Don't let anybody tell you we're not waging a war on marijuana users in America. That's exactly what we're doing and that's why marijuana policy reform has nothing do with people wanting to get high. This is about justice, human rights, and common sense. To jettison these principles because of marijuana is an act of unfathomable lunacy.

Rebirth Brass Band at Sullivan Hall

To all the funksters out there-- another funky good time at Sullivan Hall awaits. Rebirth Brass Band heads up to NYC from New Orleans this Friday, bringing with them their big brass band tradition...(and, I'm sure, a good ol' NOLA party!) Whether you're a fan of heavy funk, New Orleans music, or big brass bands that know how to get down, this will be a show worth checking out.

Opening the show is Brother Joscephus and the Love Revival Revolution Orchestra at 10pm. BroJo and his band play gospel style music (non religious, and mixed with funk and the soul of Ray Charles and Al Green). The band performs like they're parading down Bourbon Street and is the perfect preparation for the New Orleans institution Rebirth Brass Band. BroJo is a returning favorite at Sullivan Hall- having opened for Bonerama in June, Joe Russo back in April, and the NOLITA Mardi Gras celebration in February.

Three 5 Mafia New Album

Three 6 Mafia a charming yet terrifying group is wrapping up work on their new album Laws of Power amidst false rumors of a breakup. With classic hip hop work ethic, Three 6 Mafia is constantly recording new music and promoting themselves on YouTube and Twitter. Juicy J one of the bands last two existing members tells Billboard.com, "we've probably got about 20 songs, about 90 percent of the album is done." DJ Paul, who makes up the second half of the duo adds, "we always record up 'til the day it's time to turn it in, just in case we come up with something else that's cool. We write and record all the time, 24 hours a day. We've got a few different studios and mobile studios on our computers, so we never stop."

Three-6 Mafia’s concerts are known to result in everything from human stampedes and trampled fans to the occasional brawl; possibly though not necessarily, encouraged by ultra violent lyrics that have come to define their own genre of “horrorcore rap” (ask Tipper Gore). The group has a softer side though, personally calling fans to talk to them and shopping around their own cooking show.

The two lead singles for the album include “Shake My” and a remix of Lil Freak (Ugh Ugh Ugh)” which first appeared on Juicy J’s recent Solo Album. Laws of Power also includes an electronica inspired track produced by Tiesto called “Feel It,” featuring Flo Rida and Sean Kingstong. This approach seemed to work for Kanye West with “Stronger,” and should for Three 6 provided they don’t screw over a major music festival. Laws of Power is slated for release November 10th.

Flaming Fire Highline Ballroom

These people give hipsters a good name, they know how to have and have an interesting community vibe. You want to go see this show it will be a good time. They know how to make proper use of the psychedelic experience.

Flaming Fire is the twisted creation of Patrick Hambrecht, Midwestern son of a Baptist preacher. He imagined the group as an eerily masked Greek chorus, inspired not only by his religious upbringing, but his avid passion for comic books and creepy things that go bump in the night. Flaming Fire's weird and catchy songs, lively stage show, and unique costumes have helped gain them a strong fanbase at home in New York, and a growing fanbase throughout the nation. They've shared the stage with such acts as Services, The Blow, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Faun Fables, Peaches and Psychic TV.

Flaming Fire's new album, "Holy, Holy, Holy - a converts guide to Flaming Fire" will be released on U.K. label Ex-Gratia Recordings, with a spring European tour in 2010. They have gained much press (NY Times, Chicago Tribune, The New Yorker) for their Illustrated Bible Project, a live salon and website project wherein they invite professional artists and laypeople to illustrate a verse of the Bible in whatever manner the artist sees fit. A night with Flaming Fire is a raucous, whiskey swilling, crowd pleasing blend of the wacky and the profound!

Regarded as one of hip-hop's most introspective and insightful artists, Mos Def has shaped a career that transcends music genres and artistic medium. With the release of Universal Magnetic in 1996 he became an underground favorite, leading to his legendary collaboration with Talib Kweli. The two formed Black Star, whose debut album, Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are…Black Star, would become one of the most critically acclaimed hip-hop albums of all time. Mos followed that release with his 1999 solo debut, Black On Both Sides, which featured the classic tracks "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Umi Says." The album was certified gold and credited by critics as bringing hip-hop back to its soapbox roots.

Festival Express: Jordan

We will be performing this song soon

Come in as you tread life's journey
Take Jesus as your daily guide
Though you may feel pure and safely
Without Him walking by your side
But when you come to make the crossing
At the ending of your pilgrim's way
If you ever will meet our Savior
You'll surely meet Him on that day

Now look at that cold Jordan
Look at these deep waters
Look at that wide river
Oh hear the mighty billows roar
You'd better take Jesus with you
He's a true companion
For I'm sure without Him
That you never will make it o'er

That awful Day of Judgment
Is coming in the by and by
We'll se our Lord descending
In Glory from on high
So let us keep in touch with Jesus
And in his grace the Love of God
That we may be ever called ready
When He calls us over Jordan's Tide

Now look at that cold Jordan
Look at these deep waters
Look at that wide river
Oh hear the mighty billows roar
You'd better take Jesus with you
He's a true companion
For I'm sure without Him
That you never will make it o'er

Oh what, what you gonna do
Oh what, what you gonna do
Oh how, how you gonna feel
When you come to the end of the Way

it was a bunch of bad music, Jay Z was the best part and that's not saying much, Coldplay MGMT? It sucked. MGMT debuted a new song it sounds like whiney preteens are singing it. Tool rocked though, the Alex Grey CoSM crew was out in full effect.
