Rock the Earth- Summer Tour

Here's what Rock the Earth sent me, they're good guys...
Rock the Earth kicked off Summer Tour 2009 with RtE playing a very active role at the Memorial Day Weekend music festival Summer Camp in Chillicothe, Illinois. We presented Green Screens (environmental documentaries) each night in the Change of Atmosphere tent, and provided concert-goers with an outlet for recycling their old mobile phones.

Thanks go to our partners at Musictoday, Jam Productions, Gibson and Oscilloscope for their generous donations of great prizes.

Executive Director Shawn Kilmurray had the pleasure of presenting a special Q&A / acoustic set featuring Cornmeal. We enjoyed good music from moe., Umphrey’s McGee, Willie Nelson, Los Lobos, and Gomez, as well as Cornmeal and a host of others. Special thanks to Vanessa Robinson, James Gooch and Ian Goldberg for inviting us to participate. READ MORE SUMMER CAMP »

Meanwhile, at Bonnaroo , Rock the Earth will again hold a series of panel discussions and artist question and answer sessions live on the Solar Stage each day. Moderated by Rock the Earth Board President Marc Ross, the theme of the panel discussions will be "Social Change Through Music," and will explore the synergies between the artists that create music, and its interconnectedness to the environment and the world around us. Confirmed panelists so far include Erykah Badu, Danny Louis (Gov’t Mule), Al Schnier (moe.), Will Sheff (Okkervil River), Ben Sollee, Eric Johnson and Ryan Rightmire (Turbine), Laura Sohn (AC Entertainment), Rebecca Lichtenfeld (WITNESS), Bob Ferguson (Oxfam), Andy Bernstein (HeadCount), Gregor Barnum (7th Generation), Nick Morgan (Rex Foundation and Black Rock Arts Foundation) and Evan Baker (Conscious Alliance)

Upcoming Sullivan Hall Shows

The great Sullivan Hall is at it again.

Thurs. May 28 Eric Lindell with special guest Jamie McClean
$18 adv., $20 dos A soulful guitar-slinging upstart with his heart in the R&B of the '60s and his soul

8pm in New Orleans. Low-key yet impressive talents as singer, songwriter, and

bandleader. ...soulful, gospel-styled, slow-burning vibes best described as rootsy. As casually inviting as a crisp Spring day...impressive.

Sat. May 30 Eric Krasno & Chapter 2 11:30pm/ Alexis P. Suter 10:30pm/ Moon Taxi

$12 adv., $15 dos 9:30pm/ Benjy Davis Project 8:30pm/ Soapbox Army 7:30pm

7pm doors Super soul quartet featuring Eric Krasno (guitar) of Soulive & Lettuce, Adam

Deitch (drums) of Lettuce, Nigel Hall (vocals/keys)
& Louis Cato (bass).

Eric Krasno, guitarist and producer, is a founding member of Soulive and hip-hop production team Fyre Dept. Since forming Soulive in 1999, guitarist Eric Krasno, organist Neal Evans and drummer Alan Evans have developed a reputation as one of the most sought after instrumental soul-funk trios around, a hard-touring live act that's thrown down everywhere from small rock clubs to major festivals worldwide.
Chapter 2 is the next phase in the story of Eric and his longtime collaborator, drummer Adam Deitch, alongside vocalist and keyboardist Nigel Hall and bassist Louis Cato.

Fri. June 5 Papa Grows Funk with Rubblebucket Orchestra
$18 adv., $20 dos Papa Grows Funk's tight grooves re-define the funk-jam band. Tethered by the

7:30pm slinky Hammond B3 and gravel pit vocals of bandleader John "Papa" Gros," the

band is a "who's-who" of New Orleans' best musicians. Influenced by The Meters, Dr. John and The Neville Brothers, Papa Grows Funk parcels it out New Orleans-style, paying homage to the tradition through Gros' sparse but rhythmic style offset by June Yamagishi's blazing guitar.

Wed. June 10 Ropeadope's 10th Anniversary Party - A Benefit for Scotty Hard featuring
$20 adv., $25 dos John Medeski, Charlie Hunter, John Ellis, Billy Martin and more special guests

9pm show TBA
Scotty Hard has dedicated the past twenty years to creating and co-creating some incredible music but in mid-February, Scott became paralyzed after a horrific car accident after coming home from a late night mixing session. A life devoted to artistic production does not always spell financial security. Like many artists and musicians, Scott did not have health insurance at the time of his
life-altering injury. Scott applied for Medicaid in February, but his application is still pending. As of now, the outlook for insurance coverage (from Medicaid and from legal action) is uncertain. It is urgent that we raise funds to secure Scott's financial security and well-being. His friends have established a Special Needs Trust, The Scotty Hard Trust, to receive donations and administer to his immediate and long-term care needs.

Fri. June 19 Bonerama with special guests Brother Joscephus & The Love Revival

$20 adv., $25 dos Revolution Orchestra

8:30pm show When Bonerama struts onstage with its four-trombone frontline, you can guess it's not quite like any rock 'n' roll band you've seen. When they tear into some vintage New Orleans funk, there's no questioning from which city these guys hail. And when those 'bones start ripping into Hendrix and Led Zeppelin licks, all stylistic bets are off. Bonerama has been repeatedly recognized by Rolling Stone, hailed as "the ultimate in brass balls" (2005) and praised for their "...crushing ensemble riffing, human-feedback shrieks and wah-wah growls." (2007) Bonerama carries the brass-band concept to places unknown.

The Soul of John Black at Sullivan Hall

The Soul of John Black
Thursday May 14th 9:30pm (long set)
Tickets $15 through Ticketweb.com

The Soul of John Black comes to Sullivan Hall on Thursday, May 14 2009. The Soul of John Black (aka John Bigman) has quite the impressive resume, having played as a percussionist with the Miles Davis Band, eight years of guitar and keyboard work with rock-funk-ska band Fishbone, and touring and session work with artists like Dr. Dre, Eminem, Nikka Costa, Bruce Hornsby and Everlast.

On his new album, Black John, Bigham blends blues, folk, funk, rock, country, classic soul, Gospel and world music. After spending most of last year playing in clubs around the country, Bigham decided he wanted to record an upbeat album. Black John is an exciting album "with more sex, more funk, and deeper, more complex rhythms than his previous work" and is guaranteed to make listeners want to dance.

John Bigham has found a friend in publications like The New Yorker, Spin Magazine, USA today and more, all praising his silky smooth singing voice and his ability to mix true blues with funk, gospel southern rock and even a little hip hop.

John Brown's Body at Southpaw: Brooklyn

saw this band in florida at bear creek, people loved them...

Brooklyn, NY - On Saturday, May 16th, progressive reggae band John Brown's Body performs at Southpaw. JBB's last studio album Amplify, debuted at number one on Billboard's Reggae Chart, and made iTunes "Best of 2008" list. On March 17th, JBB returns with Re-Amplify, a new release featuring six remixes of songs from Amplify, along with a new, previously unreleased track. www.myspace.com/johnbrownsbody

The producers involved with Re-Amplify are a diverse group of top notch remixers, including Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo (guitarist from Gym Class Heroes), Tommie Sunshine (American rave legend and remixer of songs by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Killers, Panic! At The Disco, Good Charlotte), GoldieLocks (up-and-coming artist/producer from the UK, recently nominated for DJ Mag Best British Breakthrough Producer), Dubmatix (one of Canada's best known reggae producers, recently nominated for a Juno), Wrongtom (London DJ who has remixed Hard-Fi, Lily Allen, and Roots Manuva), and Blue King Brown (Australian reggae/afro-beat masters, of whom Carlos Santana said, "...my favorite band right now").

John Brown's Body has gone through significant changes since the release of 2005's Pressure Points. Lead singer Elliot Martin underwent throat surgery, several band members departed and most significantly, the band suffered the loss of bassist Scott Palmer. Palmer lost his battle with cancer in 2006, only six months after his diagnosis. Emerging from these changes, the band's current line-up is a focused, more experimental outfit than ever before, challenging the usual notions of contemporary reggae.

John Brown's Body is on tour now, in support of Amplify, and their brand new release, Re-Amplify.

"Some of the most invigorating, progressive reggae released in some time."
- JamBase

"...the band's energy is soaked up and spread out in all the right places, never allowing Amplify to slow down and catch its breath. A heck of an achievement..." - Glide

Big Business union pool

this full review will be up on jambase.com shortly

The Big Business Concert at Union Pool was an interesting mix of tatood biker types, hardcore loyalists and hipsters who were trying hard to be cool. There were about 200 of us pressed up against each other beneath a sign that read “maximum occupancy 75.” This shows the great lengths fans will endure to hear some of the best and most interesting new sounds in rock today. Whether it’s someone new to NYC shopping for subcultures or a rock nerd who’s is fiercely loyal to his independent music labels they all got leveled by the force of this band. Big Business was celebrating the second night of their album release party for Mind the Drift, the first night being at The Mercury Lounge in Manhattan. Big Business is one of the standout bands in the Sludge/Stoner Rock genre which is made up primarily of bands on Hydra Head Records.

Bluegrass Jams in NYC

SCROLL DOWN FOR DATES AND LISTINGS email alex in the contact form if you want me to put something up

NYC bluegrass jams, I went to Sunny's this weekend, there were some real pro's there. Next time I would like to bring something to record it with. There is a house bass, which I occasionally jumped on from my banj0, a fiddle, two female vocalists, two great guitar players, both with excellent vocals, a dobro, a pedal steal, two banjo's (including me) and a mandolin. every one was experts, and I was the most novice, though I consider myself quite good. This is some serious bluegrass, Jordan from Astrograss tipped me off to this jam.

my music

some good solid jams are sunnys/redhook every saturday, jalopy/redhook every wednesday, kili's/brooklyn and vin rouge/south slope, wednesdays.

my running list of jams
most of these are weekly or bi weekly

Bluegrass has a tremendous ability to provoke emotions, with its combination of raw, natural, wood and steel acoustic instruments and folksy, timeless lyrics. One band that has taken this and mastered it is a new bluegrass band Old Crow Medicine Show. This group has done exactly what a millennial bluegrass band should do; they have incorporated the totality of the knowledge of the ages, from old time (O.T) to Appalachia bluegrass, to 1960's psychedelic revival, and modern newgrass. You can distinctly hear Bob Dylan's harmonica in many of these songs, in fact one of their most famous songs is a remake of an old out take from the soundtrack from the film Garrett & Billy the Kid. The original out take was called “Rock me Mama” while the remake was called “Wagon Wheel.” They took the rough 1 minute outtake added versus and came out with a beautiful song which was also one of their most popular.

emograss archive (Old and in the Way and Old Crow Medicine Show: I included some Nick Drake in the emograss archive because it makes incredibly emotional and haunting accoustic music, that draws on much of the same influences of bluegrass.)

Modern bluegrass has seized on this emotional aspect of bluegrass, identified it, isolated it, tagged it up bagged it up and sold it in the store. I call this "emograss," something I once heard this term used as a derogatory term. During some attempt by some emo girl at an open mic trying to get the bluegrass backing band to play her emo song. Two of the most emotional and beautiful songs are bluegrass songs “Wagon Wheel” and “I Hear them All,” by O.C.M.S, these are also their two most popular songs. They both use a common chord progression, G, D, Em, C, this is transposed up a step as well in certain versions to A, just snap the capo up to frets and you’re done. Something about going from G to D, then throwing in that E minor makes things really emotional, another song with a similar to this that tugs on the heart strings is “Wading in the Velvet Sea”(beware this is me playing the song) by Phish.

Wading in the velvet sea.

this from Wikipedia on the origins of Wagon Wheel.

which was an out take from Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid is a soundtrack album released by Bob Dylan in 1973 for the Sam Peckinpah film of the same name. Dylan himself appeared in the film as the character "Alias".

The Mexico City session produced two notable outtakes: "Peco's Blues," an instrumental based on the traditional "What Does The Deep Sea Say?," and the song "Goodbye Holly." Both tracks were rejected but eventually bootlegged.

The Burbank sessions yielded a few spontaneous recordings, including a jam titled "Sweet Amarillo" and a simple, improvised song titled "Rock Me Mama." Neither one was seriously considered for the soundtrack as they were borne more out of leisure than actual work. The latter was eventually written fully and recorded as "Wagon Wheel" by Nashville roots rock band Old Crow Medicine Show, then subsequently by artists such as Against Me! and others.

I hear them all

NAS & DAMIAM "JR. GONG" MARLEY TO COLLABORATE FOR CAMP BISCO VIII 3-DAY MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL IN MARIAVILLE, NEW YORK JULY 16-18 2009

NAS & DAMIAM "JR. GONG" MARLEY TO COLLABORATE FOR CAMP BISCO VIII
3-DAY MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL
IN MARIAVILLE, NEW YORK JULY 16-18 2009

Collaboration will showcase their new album "Distant Relative"

Atlanta, Georgia (May 7, 2009) - Continuing the tradition of onstage collaborations; Camp Bisco VIII, the eighth annual three-day music and arts festival in Mariaville, New York this July 16-18, 2009 will play host to one of it's most eclectic pairings yet, when Nas & Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley take the stage together. The two have worked together before on ‘Road to Zion’, the second single from Marley’s breakthrough Grammy award winning third album, “Welcome to Jamrock.” This summer will see them expanding upon that collaboration as they showcase tracks from their forthcoming album along with a few of their own originals with Damian’s live band.

The news of “Distant Relative,” slated for an early June release, has Camp Bisco fans enthused by the prospect of seeing these two legends on stage together. The combination of Nas and Marley may seem strange at first, but the son of Jamaican music legend Bob Marley and the legendary NYC rapper share a common ideology when it comes to music. Damian has created his own identity and legendary status with a type of reggae that borrows heavily from both dancehall and hip-hop. Past collaborations with such rappers as Method Man, Red Man, and Snoop Dogg (who performed at last summer’s annual Camp Bisco event), make Nas a logical next step on his musical path.

Camp Bisco has always been a culturally eclectic festival with a very diverse musical lineup. Past performers have included: Snoop Dogg, Thievery Corporation, Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, MSTRKRFT, The Roots, Infected Mushroom, STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9), Shpongle, Younger Brother, Brazilian Girls, Girl Talk, Bassnectar, and !!!. This year's lineup is no different, including: The Disco Biscuits - All 3 Nights; Nas & Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley; STS9 (2 nights); DFA Disco Tent; Twisted Records All Star Tent; Chromeo; Dr. Dog; K'Naan; The Orb; Younger Brother; Special Disco Version James Murphy & Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem; Flying Lotus; Pretty Lights; Shpongle; EOTO; Holy Ghost; Orchard Lounge; John Brown's Body; Telepath; Boombox; Martyn, BioDiesel with KJ Sawka; AC Slater; Phantogram; MO2; DJ Haitian; Fort Knox Five; Kill the Noise; Prometheus; Ott; Starkey; Bluetech; Indobox; Roots of Creation; Joe Nice; Tuphace; Otherwise; Dirty Paris and more.

Camp Bisco VIII will once again be held at the picturesque Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, New York. The venue will be set-up with two performance stages and a third late night dance tent. The Indian Lookout Country Club is located approximately 20 minutes travel time from Albany, New York, and sits on 200 acres of rolling, flat grass fields. The grounds come equipped with full bathrooms; which include flush toilets and showers, as well as 24/7 bathroom attendants. Festival goers will have access to a full bar on site and a general store, which sells almost every necessity for a comfortable and care free experience.

Tickets are available online at www.campbisco.net and 1-800-594-TIXX, as well as at all FYE stores in New England and select outlets in New York state. VIP packages will be made available for an additional $250 per 3 day ticket purchase. Travel packages which include; a ticket to the event, 3 night hotel stay and unlimited shuttle service to and from Camp Bisco will be made available. 15 cents of every ticket sold will be donated to Trees For The Future, an organization that has been the steward of planting trees throughout the world since the early 1970s in an effort to remedy the effects of illegal logging and unsustainable land management systems on the world's developing communities. BE-Green ticket upgrades will also be sold for an additional $2.50. Funds raised by the BE-Green upgrades will be used to offset carbon emissions through the use of renewable energy sources.

Camp Bisco VIII is presented by MCP Presents and hosted by The Disco Biscuits.

Hopewell new Album

Hopewell album which drops on May 5th on Tee Pee Records. I think you might like this one.

their record release party is at at Piano's on the 19th of May.

Tera Melos at the Bell House

So this was one of my first metal shows and I must say I that am really impressed. I may even be feeling a bit friendlier to hipsters in nug huggers. The band played very technical, fast, metal with complex rhythm changes, stops and starts. I was impressed. the melodies could use some work though. I wasn't really covering this one seriously so the pictures are bad at best. annoying at worst. the bell house is a really cool building that looks like a barn, the room is huge and this is possible by its out of the way location.

if you came here from google?

google apps is giving us the run around, we are just one of many sites to them so bear with us

Rock The Earth Awards

Presenting the 2009 Planet Defenders

Thanks to thoughtful input from Rock the Earth members and friends, we present our 2009 Planet Defenders! The winners in the three categories are:
Artist: Incubus
Community Leader: Van Jones, Green For All
Grassroots Activism: Jessy Tolkan, Energy Action Coalition

This year's winner in the Artist category, Incubus possesses awesome green credentials. Fueling their tour buses with clean-burning biodiesel, printing posters and flyers on 100-percent post-consumer recycled paper with soy ink, serving organic food backstage, offering fans organic cotton T-shirts and working with venues to increase recycling are just a few of the steps the band has taken to ensure it stays green. The band also funds the Make Yourself Foundation, a registered non-profit organization that funds various causes and charities both locally and around the world. Raising over One Million dollars to date, the band funds the foundation by donating a portion of the proceeds they generate from touring, record royalties, online auctions of concert tickets and memorabilia, and special events. Rock the Earth has been blessed to have been a past recipient and applauds Incubus for setting a stellar example of how to Rock the Earth in a conscientious manner!

Incubus front man Brandon Boyd says: "We are so fortunate to have this amazing opportunity to share music with so many people! And we are very proud to share Earth consciousness with those who come and listen. Thank you very much! And may this be just another rung in the ladder towards a brighter, more aware planet."

Van Jones is the founder of Green For All. He is also a TIME Magazine 2008 Environmental Hero, and one of Fast Company's 12 Most Creative Minds of 2008. Best-selling author of The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Solve Our Two Biggest Problems, he was recently appointed Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality. Green For All is a U.S. organization that promotes green-collar jobs and opportunities for the disadvantaged. Its mission is to build an inclusive, green economy – strong enough to resolve the ecological crisis and lift millions of people out of poverty. A tireless advocate, his commitment to creating “green pathways out of poverty” and to expanding the coalition fighting global warming has earned Van our Planet Defender award as Community Leader.

Jessy Tolkan, Executive Director of the Energy Action Coalition is this year's Planet Defender award winner for Grassroots Activism. Led by and for young people, the 50 leading organizations, 700 local groups, and hundreds of thousands of supporters that make up the Energy Action Coalition leverage their collective resources to create a clean and equitable energy future. The Energy Action Coalition is winning clean energy victories at the local, state, national and international levels – all while growing and strengthening the clean energy movement among young people from all walks of life in the United States and Canada.

Says Jessy Tolkan, “Young people are building a powerful grassroots movement. This is leading the way towards the more sustainable, equitable and prosperous future we deserve. We started by making our campuses and communities living models of sustainability and possibility. Now we are redefining what is politically possible in order to pass bold federal climate and energy legislation this year.”

This year's Planet Defenders join last year's recipients: Musicians, the Dave Matthews Band; Author and businessman Andrew Winston of Winston Eco-Strategies and Karen Cragnolin, Executive Director of Riverlink, as those we honor as individuals who embody Rock the Earth's mission to Defend the Planet One Beat at a Time.

Each Planet Defender recipient receives a one-of-a-kind award created collectively by artists Joe Benvenuto, Jason Garrett and Chico Raskey (Chico Artglass). The individuals who nominated our award winners receive a special Earth Day gift from Rock the Earth.
