Relix to stay open

News from the Brooklyn Vegan is that Relix and Jambands.com are to stay open after being sold. the magazine was unsure of it's future but luckily found a buyer. I have been talking for ages about the unfortunate decline of "jamband" related music, mostly due to all the horrible jambands out there who play who bore people so bad, it ruins the reputation of the talented ones. I recently discovered a very cool Relix mobile channel on my verizon cell phone, something very unexpected. we love Relix for keeping good music alive here in NYC despite the constant onslaught of hip music that comes with a 1-3 year expiration stamp. Relix was started originally under the title "Dead Reilix," to cover the tapers subculture of the Grateful Dead, it dropped the Dead from it's name in the mid 70's and expanded it's scope to include a multitude of genres.

EOTO Hits the Sunshine State in March

In the midst of a massive winter and spring tour, the left coast breakbeat, glitch-hop, dubstep, and house duo EOTO is prepared to dig their toes in the sandy Florida beaches for a weeklong string of dates in the Sunshine State. Gearing up for their very own version of Spring Break, EOTO has penned six shows in a seven-day span. Opening March 9th with a performance in Islamorada, the duo is poised to catch some rays while lending their innovative blend of live instrumentation and digital mixing to a Florida beach party soundtrack.

Featuring Jason Hann and Michael Travis, formerly of the progressive jam outfit String Cheese Incident, EOTO is a shot of adrenaline to the heart of the music industry. Differing in sonic stature from their mixing forefathers, the typical EOTO live experience is 100% atypical, meaning nothing is pre-recorded, nothing is pre-looped and no set is pre-planned. Every night is a distinctive journey into the musical minds of Hann and Travis, each feeding off of the other’s creativity and the audience’s vibes. EOTO combines cutting-edge technology with live instrumental performance to create truly original and melodic dance music in the moment.

Following the show at TIB Bank of the Keys in Islamorada, EOTO will venture along the coast to Key West, Miami Beach, Delray Beach and Jupiter. The Florida tour will conclude in Gainesville with a performance at Common Grounds on March 15th. DoublePlusGood new band i deem good

Doubleplusgood's is a band from the left coast. Dancipation Proclamation is their 1st release since 2006s "Somehow Everyone I know is Here". The tracks make a marked change from the electro influenced indie tracks, and go headfirst into dance territory. Carlson also enlisted the help of Typhoon drummer Pieter Hilton, who helps flesh out the tracks live. The EP is available at www.sohitek.com for pre order, and will be released in May.

Mama’s Cookin’ Return to Their Colorado Roots

Some Cali love in this cold weather...

Mama’s Cookin’
returns to their Colorado roots in March for a 10-day trek through the mountain west. The formerly Colorado-based project is well known in the area for their trademark blend of hip-hop beats and soul-driven rock. Kicking off the tour in Fort Collins, CO - the band will zigzag across the state, playing shows in Denver, Boulder and a handful of mountain towns.

Since forming in Gunnison, CO, in 2001, Mama’s Cookin’ has garnered a reputation as being a pioneer of a new sound with a knack for precise timing and fluidity. The rootsy ensemble is driven by gritty guitars and an impeccable rhythm section that dares audiences not to dance. Zebuel Early’s sincere lyricism and vocal delivery incorporates spoken word and soulful singing. Their huge rock sound has Led Zeppelin painted all over it, yet their soul seems to come straight from the Mississippi Delta, with a dusting of New Orleans funk.

With more than seven successful years under their belt, the quartet features the right proportions of harmonica and slide guitar with a tight rhythm section carrying the sound. The tightened arrangement now features Zebuel Early (guitar, vocals), Eric Matlock (keys), Mike Adamo (drums) and Steve LaBella's (bass) – allowing the music to breathe more freely. One only need look at the quartet’s influences – R.L. Burnside, Hound Dog Taylor, Johnnie Taylor, Digable Planets – to realize the variety in their musical ambition.

On tour in support of their self-titled album, which was named by Jambands.com as the 12th best of 2008, Mama’s Cookin’ packs a powerful punch both live and recorded. Their trek through Colorado will include stops in Boulder, Breckenridge, Denver and Vail, before heading back to where it all began for the band, Crested Butte. Two shows follow in Telluride with a Colorado finale in Grand Junction, before the band heads west for select coastal performances.

Expect added dates and keep up with the tour at:

St. Marks Place Hip Hop booth Busted

Another St. Marks Place icon may have bitten the dust with word that DJ Lenny's Music Stand being shut down by the NYPD. The small stand has sat for over a dozen years on the corner of St. Marks Place and Third Avenue in between former punk club/cheap shots bar The Continental and what is now the restaurant Tahini, selling color-coded mixtapes and bumping hip-hop out onto the street throughout the night. Down by the Hipster reports that "several plain clothes officers confiscating all of Lenny's music and just about everything else from his small booth." The end of an era.

Tibet House NYC, Benefit: "People Have The Power"

Last Tuesday, The Tibet House hosted its 19th annual benefit concert at New York's Carnegie Hall. Tibet House co-founder Phillip Glass once again served as the event's Master of Ceremonies, introducing a number of the evening's performers, while still keeping the benefit's theme tightly focused on the political situations facing Tibet. Performances included Antibalas, The National (who performed two new, untitled songs), Vampire Weekend, Patti Smith, Steve Earle, Angelique Kidjo, Keb' Mo', Philip Glass, and his son Zack (whose performance served as an alternate answer to that age old question, how does one get to Carnegie Hall). The Monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery started things off, with each band that followed playing two songs, and the night culminating with an all-star encore.

LANGERADO 2009 CANCELLED

Today, the 2009 Langerado Music Festival is cancelled due to sluggish ticket sales. The 7th annual event was slated to happen March 6-8 at their new home in downtown Miami’s Bicentennial Park.

Langerado’s independent local promoters, faced with a very tough decision in a dismal economy, cancelled the 2009 event only after every possible option was exhausted.

As Langerado Co-Promoter Ethan Schwartz explains, “Langerado has always put the fan experience first. Unfortunately, during these difficult economic times, and facing a first year in a new venue, it’s become apparent that we cannot execute a production that lives up to the high standards of our past events. Putting Langerado on hold was the toughest decision we have ever had to make. We are very grateful for the support of the greater-Miami community and the music community during this difficult time.”

All tickets purchased will be refunded. Please look for ticket refunds to be processed in the next 5-7 business days. Each order will be refunded to the credit card in full, minus the included order processing fees. Shipping fees will also be credited for those orders that did not select the free shipping promotion. Visit www.musictoday.com for more information.

Nolafunk 3rd Annual Mardi Gras Ball

CEG Presents is proud to announce that they will host Nolafunk.com's 3rd Annual Mardi Gras Ball on Saturday, February 21st at 8pm at (Le) Poisson Rouge. The New Orleans style celebration will feature performances by New Orleans funk powerhouse Big Sam's Funky Nation, as well as bands led by Crescent City funk/roots rockers and multi-instrumentalists Eric Lindell and Anders Osborne - and will culminate in a late-night Mardi Gras jam featuring some very special guests. Local jazz/breakbeat luminary DJ Mocean Worker will start the night off and spin between performances throughout.

In the spirit of this truly one of a kind event, guests are strongly encouraged to wear celebratory costumes and Mardi Gras finery. Throw beads will hang throughout the room and, in true Mardi Gras parade style, will be tossed out to the audience to wear during the show. The city of New Orleans holds one of the most famous Mardi Gras celebrations in the world, and Nolafunk.com will bring the thrill, fun, and intensity of a true New Orleans throw-down to New York City on February 21st.

Big Sam's Funky Nation is a funk and jazz brass band from New Orleans. Big Sam, formerly the trombonist for The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, keeps crowds dancing with his powerful playing, onstage energy and call/response style emceeing. His group of jazz trained musicians deemed "the funky nation" are known for their exuberant dancing and playing. Eric Lindell is a California born, New Orleans schooled soul/roots/rocker whose original songs combine rhythm and blues, reggae grooves, swamp rock and blues. He is accomplished on guitar, harmonica, keyboards and bass, and has performed with some of the Crescent City's top musicians as well as some of the jam band community's biggest names. Born in Sweden, Anders Osborne has called New Orleans home since 1985. His music combines classic American musical forms such as blues, rock and roll, and Crescent City funk to create a sound that acknowledges no borders as they're usually understood.

Nolafunk.com's 3rd Annual Mardi Gras Ball is presented by NYC-based independent concert promoters Creative Entertainment Group. CEG is dedicated to bringing the undeniable music and spirit of New Orleans to New York City through their Nolafunk.com website. Since 2005, CEG has brought incredible performances to New York City and beyond with artists like Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Rebirth Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Trombone Shorty, Bonerama, Jon Cleary, and many more creating an enthusiastic community of New Yorkers eager for more NOLA funk!

The party will be held at one of the city's newest venues, and recent winner of WNYC's listener poll for Best New Music Venue, (Le) Poisson Rouge (www.lepoissonrouge.com), a multimedia art cabaret founded by musicians on the site of the historic Village Gate. The venue will be decorated in purple, green and gold to create a festive Mardi Gras atmosphere. Celebrating among the decorations, costumes, and beads with the help of three New Orleans bands known for their superstar talent, energy, and for relentlessly keeping the crowd moving, guests are sure to enjoy a genuine Big Easy Mardi Gras experience right in New York City.

Top 3 Reasons Langerado was Cancelled

founder of the festival Ethan Shwartz: "Langerado has always put the fan experience first. Unfortunately, during these difficult economic times, and facing a first year in a new venue, it's become apparent that we cannot execute a production that lives up to the high standards of our past events. Putting Langerado on hold was the toughest decision we have ever had to make. We are very grateful for the support of the greater-Miami community and the music community during this difficult time."

Top 3 reasons Langerado was Cancelled?

1) slow ticket sales due to phish concert and core fanbase backlash,

3) diverted too much from core fanbase delving into indie rock and other hipster music, sad because they really had no choice coinciding with the phish concert. (no choice except make it another date)

4)Miami not the place to hold a festival during this economy. Not only do you have to pay for tickets, you have to worry about a hotel room, transportation while you're there, and the fact that all the shows are strewn about the city really kills the community vibe that festivals are loved for.

click the image for full size

Looks like the promoters got the message loud and flear. I feel this is really too bad as despite all the negativity surrounding the festival I was looking forward to going to the show and seeing all my Florida friends. I can't wait to see this festival return next year at full force, just like Bonnaroo did this year and reclaim their throne! It truly is a cherished Florida institution.

Why I'm into Music and not Movies

You may remember that Christian Bale went nuts on the set of "Terminator Salvation" a few months back, threatening to stop production and beat some serious ass.

The incident was audiotaped, and it's amazing. It happened on the set after a director of photography accidentally ruined a scene by walking onto the set. Bale lost it, screaming, yelling and threatening to quit if the bosses didn't fire the dude.

Film execs sent the tape to the insurance company that insured the film in case Bale bailed.

Mistakes happen, fix the problem and move on. The big DISRUPTION was the tantrum this man had. Actors have to get back into character, workers everywhere have to remember what they were doing, and to try and keep their minds on task. The entire set will now be harder to work on, because of the the environment Bale just produced. There is bad press, there are people who will not see this movie. Like I said, mistakes happen, fix the problem and move on.

ticketless phish fans

this explanation comes from the band. if you didn't get a ticket just get a Bonnaroo ticket as this has been confirmed, by me.

We have heard from many fans regarding this past weekend's onsales, particularly the shows that went on sale via Live Nation's website. Many of you experienced extremely long wait times, error messages, and quite simply, an inability to get through and purchase tickets. Clearly, the system was unable to handle the extraordinary demand. We're very sensitive to making the process of getting Phish tickets as straightforward as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your continued support and patience.

Clean Vibes Applications

Here is some information from Anna Borofsky head of the revolutionary recycling and sustainability project Clean Vibes, help her out this year she needs volunteers! and it is a worthwhile experience for college age post college age, people with wanderlust.

2009 marks the 10th anniversary of Clean Vibes as its own company! As we celebrate a decade of event recycling, we have already been very busy gearing up for what appears to be the busiest Clean Vibes season to date. Lots of new festivals are making a commitment to reduce their footprint and want to work with us to ensure that they are walking the sustainable walk, not just talking the talk.

Some very exciting news for our 10th year as well – we have just launched our brand new and long overdue website!!! The site has been completely redesigned and has a long overdue update to all of the content of the site. So head on over to cleanvibes.com and check it out! Clean Vibes has come a long way in the last 10 years, and it is pretty amazing to see just how many events we have worked, and what an enormous impact our recycling efforts at all of these events have had on the Earth. Every single one of you that has worked or volunteered with us before should take great pride in all that the website, and the company as a whole, represents. We can’t wait to continue to help keep the scene clean and spread the clean vibe in 2009!

All that being said, we are now accepting applications for the 2009 season. The new applications can be downloaded from our website at:
http://cleanvibes.com/vibes_jobs.cfm

Please be sure to read the descriptions of the positions carefully. Also, as always, all applicants have the option of submitting an audio version of the narrative section of the application in case you feel more comfortable speaking your answers than writing them.

**If you are only interested in volunteering with Clean Vibes this year, and you are receiving this email, you do NOT need to reapply as you have already been accepted within our volunteer database. If you want to volunteer with us at Bonnaroo, you can go ahead and sign up in the database now. Several other shows will be added to the database for sign up within the next few months.

If you have any questions, please email me at annab@cleanvibes.com Please read through all of the information on the Employment page of the website carefully before emailing with questions.

Thanks for all of your hard work and positive energy over the years – we hope to see you again this season!

For the Earth,
