Benevento review coming

His rendition of “Seems So Long Ago Nancy” off Me Not Me by Leanord Cohen, was haunting and sad at the same time, the original song, by 60’s crooner, is a melancholy tale with mysterious lyrics, that was about a troubled young women who shot herself at age 21. The song was one of Cohens biggest hits and another good pic to adapt to jazz instrumentals. Benevento picked some of his favorite songs from the past and present, his various circuit bent analog and digital devices, used with tact added a whole new element to the song giving it far more depth and texture then the piano could do alone. At times seeing him hunched over his Wurlziger piano playing this old haunting classic, with his strange devices he reminded me of a busker I see in the time square station, an old man who performs on the keyboard with dancing animatronic toys layed out. The live interpretation of the song, on this evening was a little less meloncholoy then the album version. But it was appropriately played for a live show, There’s was no need to get the audience worked up into tears after meanwhile his covers are so real. my favorite album all year since I discovered RAQ, on RAQ live.
