Allman Brothers 40th Aniversary Without Dickey

This post comes via those musical bad ass at hidden tracks.

Gregg Allman Says no to Dickey Betts and that he won't be a part of the 40th Anniversary Run at New York City’s Beacon Theatre on March 8 - 21. We are all holding out hope that the tide may change, but it's not looking good. During my time in Florida I had a friend who's dad was friends with the band. We got back stage passes to Wannee, and let me tell you it was like no backstage I have ever been to, there was a STRICTLY enforced NO DRUGS allowed rule back stage, and the ship was run pretty tight. I respect Gregg and his sobriety and understand that Dickey left do to issues with his drugs and alcohol, but it seems that Dickey has learned some extents of moderation in his golden years and that they could both drop their southern pride and make some music that made them famous. I meen this new band is great but it's not the Allman Brothers. The Allmans were Peak'n when it was Dickey, Duanne and Gregg. and Dickey really carried the torch for the signature style and wrote so many of their great songs. Songs that go Beyond personal arguments and should unify us on a higher level. All I can say is that I am holding out hope that these two may make beautiful music together again and celebrate the bands history like they keep saying this 40th aniversary will be.

dickey talking about being ousted from the band here

Gregg told Ross Cat of BestofWNY.com that Betts is a no…

Ross CAT -The rumor mill is churning that artists like ERIC CLAPTON, ARETHA FRANKLIN and BOZ SCAGGS will join in the celebration of the ALLMAN BROTHERS music as well as honoring founding member your late great brother DUANE ALLMAN.

Is there any chance during the 40th anniversary tour that DICKEY BETTS will be welcomed back to perform with the band if even for just one night?

Gregg ALLMAN - There is no chance that DICKEY BETTS will ever be involved with anything to do with the ALLMAN BROTHERS Band; we’ve been down that road too many times and it just wouldn’t work.

These guests best remembered for playing with Duanne will be appreciated though, and the rumors are flying that Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton and/or Boz Scaggs may show.

No Dickey at the 40th is like the chicken and no egg. :)

I was looking up info on the reunion and saw that pic of myself and Dickey. Wow, the memories.

Dickey is original, not a knock off (no matter how great the subsequent players have been, and they certainly have been fantastic). But it's like real maple syrup... just the right amount of sweetness. Dickey has "THE sound" as Dan Toler was so fond of calling it. It just ain't the same with out it.
And the spontaneous compositions, nobody does it better with that genre... imho
Oh well...
