another great
Going Down the Road- April 1971 from Ladies and Gentlemen the Grateful Dead
Goin Down the Road Accoustic slide jam by the Allman Brothers
A great Goin Down the Road intro starts at 4:25, the best solo of all time starts at 6:11, it will be worth your while. Check back for the all time greatest guitar solo's, not gonna do a top ten 2008 this year, maybe one. This is the year indie rock took over the radio and as we all know, that sucks. not because good music I used to like got popular, but because shitty music once again works it's way into the mainstreem. That's right most hipster indie rock SUCKS, and the majority of the shit on pitchfork SUCKS, except for Girl Talk, which made the top 10 list for their 2008 shit picks. so by indie rock dominating the airwaves now, it just proves that it was simple candy pop to begin with, only dumbed down, simple music can be on the radio because that's what the masses can take, anything with depth or intelligence is too much for Joe Sixpack, Cindy MTV, or Fred Fastfood. some of it is OK like Kings of Leon or My Morning Jacket who started out as live music, festival staples who knew how to jam. but most of it sucks. especially that sickly wierd no talent beck wannabe dearhunter.
this one below is a little bit later in the career then i prefer but still decent

Blue Turtle Seduction & Izabella New Years Celebration
Blue Turtle Seduction & Izabella New Years Celebration
The fresh musical movement known as Blue Turtle Seduction is a two-fold sonic experience. Both musically and socially aware, the five-piece rock / bluegrass / reggae / hip-hop hybrid creates music that defies classification. Their 2008 release, "13 Floors" was recently selected as one of the top 100 albums of 2008 at KTHX 100.1 radio. Nestled between legends such as Radiohead, Lucinda Williams and Joan Biaz, 2009 promises to be a big year for this South Lake Tahoe band.

Blue Turtle Seduction & Izabella New Years Bash
Great Basin Brewery
846 Victorian Avenue, Sparks, Nevada
Ticket Phone: 775-355-7711
10 PM, 21+
$20 adv | $25 doors
Izabella is another California band to keep your eyes on. Their originals are dead solid with hooky lines and exultant, flowing music --- following in the Bay Area tradition of great forebears like the Sons of Champlin, Izabella is making national waves in a very short time.
The New Year's Eve show will begin at 10:00 PM and will feature drink specials on the Great Basin's award winning brews as well as a champagne toast at midnight. Fans are encouraged to dress in "retro-formal attire" and it is strongly suggested that attendees purchase tickets in advance, the show is expected to sell out.

NYC bluegrass jams, I went to Sunny's this weekend, there were some real pro's there. Next time I would like to bring something to record it with. There is a house bass, which I occasionally jumped on from my banj0, a fiddle, two female vocalists, two great guitar players, both with excellent vocals, a dobro, a pedal steal, two banjo's (including me) and a mandolin. every one was experts, and I was the most novice, though I consider myself quite good. This is some serious bluegrass, Jordan from Astrograss tipped me off to this jam.

Here is a recording from the bluegrass jams at Sunny's in Red Hook from Saturday November/22/ some really good pickers there, a young guy named Zach really stole the show that night on his mandolin, though he switched between bass. his roommates are in a really cool band called Droid which I'll write another post about, it's improvised electronica, like STS9 with horns and a NYC acid jazz edge. Anyway back to bluegrass, the songs here are classic old time jams, "Hesitation Blues," and "How Mountain Girls Can Love." The instruments are, a few guitars, a banjo a piano, mandolin and bass. Sunny's is located out by the water in red hook, its kind of hard to get to but well worth the pilgrimage to this bluegrass mecca.

Droid Factory Concert

the lineup in the band is amir, jordan and nick from the antibalas afrobeat orchestra
some info on Droid...
In 2000 the band was signed to Shadow Records and released "NYC D 'n' B" as well as various tracks on Shadow compilations "Hard Sessions" 1 & 2. NYC's DJ Spooky and Detroit producer Carl Craig also used Droid material for their own remixes. The musicians that make-up DROID combine experimentation, musicianship and an attitude for current beat culture. Jordan McLean (member of Antibalas & leader of Fire Of Space) plays trumpet, Amir ziV (long-time member of Cyro Baptista's Beat The Donkey & leader of KOTKOT w/Marc Ribot, Cyro Baptista & Shahzad Ismaily) plays drums, Adam Holzman (long-time keyboardist and musical director of Miles Davis!!! & leader of Brave New World) plays synthesizers & Fender Rhodes. As for the LOW-END.... BASS that is - it's basically a rotating "electric" chair which so far has been bravely filled by: Tim LeFebvre, Jonathan Maron, Shahzad Ismaily, Stu Brooks, Luke O'Malley, Nick Movshon & Yossi Fine. Droid has been very active durind 2007/2008 playing live and recording/archiving their current sound. Recently, the band started collaborating with projection artist extraordinaire Chris Jordan.

Whats Next for Headcount this Year
Do you want to have a hand in defining the Presidential agenda? A HeadCount partner organization called Ideas for Change in America empowers anyone to submit an idea for change and then vote on the best ideas from across the country. The 10 most popular ideas will be presented to the new administration as suggested priorities. To take part, please visit www.change.org/ideas.
This is just a hint of the sort of activity you'll see from HeadCount in 2009. This year we registered 105,697 people in 2008 and helped bring a record turnout to the polls on November 4th. But voting is only the first step. The next step is to encourage active participation in democracy and support socially-conscious undertakings throughout the world of music. We have an opportunity to harness the energy of our community and leave a positive imprint on the world around us. So let's not stop at the ballot box.
The first initiative we'll launch is a postcard writing campaign. The next time you visit a HeadCount table at a concert, you'll find postcards you can fill out to urge elected officials to make an issue (of your choice) a "legislative priority." Collectively we can generate tens of thousands of these cards and ensure that we have a voice in how decisions are made in Washington.
Get Out the Vote Party
We want to thank all of you who came out to the Magic Hat Get Out the Vote Party on November 3rd in New York City and all those who tuned in to watch via iClips. Headliners Robert Randolph, Joss Stone, ?uestlove and Stanton Moore were joined by surprise acts Phil Lesh, Warren Haynes, The Disco Biscuits and John Medeski. Check out some photos and reviews.
Contest Winners
We want to congratulate the winners of the contests that HeadCount ran throughout 2008. Billie Reese won an all-expense paid trip for two on Jam Cruise 7 as the winner of the Push the Button Contest, which helped HeadCount register over 25,000 people online this year. Alex Byrne was the runner-up. HeadCount volunteers Laura Scalet (Evergreen State College) and Liz O'Donnell (Boston University) both won $10,000 scholarships by finishing in the top six in the Ultimate College Bowl contest. Eight HeadCount volunteers were also awarded trips on Jam Cruise for their efforts registering voters in 2008. They include Kristie Freed of St. Louis, MO, who won her spot as part of the Fan-to-Fan Phone Campaign. The other winners were Melissa Brennan (New York City, Outstanding Team Leader), Dan Conroe (Chicago, Outstanding Regional Coordinator), Kelley Fergueson (Nashville, TN, Outstanding Member of Central Leadership), Kari Frea (Milwaukee, WI, "Local Hero"), Laura Scalet (Olympia, WA, Outstanding College Campaign Organizer), Tappan Vickery (San Francisco, Outstanding Overall Contribution), and Joe Williamson (Philadelphia, Outstanding Contribution in the Field).
