Anyone who has gone to the Burning Festival in Black Rock Desert Arizona, has heard of the Electric Giraffe Rave Raffe, a 17 foot tall engineering marvel who’s creator Lindsay Lawlor describes as a “shy nocturnal creature of the Playa.” You may also have heard of this creature on the Discovery Channel, Wired’s website or a plethora of blogs and websites. Raffe looks beautiful when lit up at night, the glowing LEDS creating a futuristic, carnival like-atmosphere, not unlike the Burning Man Festival itself. The creature is based on Timiya’s mechanical giraffe, a model kit which runs on one R6/AA/UM3 battery and has a total weight of 110 g, a far cry from the upscaled version’s 1600 pounds, This Giraffe runs on a 12 horsepower engine, that burns the cleaner burning propane gas, the engine connects directly to a generator that creates electricity to charge the system’s batteries, the batteries then power a 3 horsepower electric motor that uses only 1.5 horsepower to move the giraffe, making it an electric hybrid. Raffe has 400 hundred watts of audio power with plans for a 2000 watt expansion.LED lights and other mods are constantly being updated and the motor is silent by design, intended to emulate the giraffe’s quite nature. Raffe issues verbal invitations to pet him and touch sensors mounted on the nose and eyebrows cause the giraffe to wag its ears or say things like “that feels nice.”
The man behind this technology and a notable contributor to the electronic giraffe project is Russell Pinnington of 1337 robotics, 1337 meaning leet or“elite” in hacker “leet speak.” Leet Speak being a complete language build around strengthening the geek community and making it even more obscure to outsiders.Pinnington is responsible for the electronics and programming of Raffe, he writes the code for the MAKE controller kit that is the giraffe’s brain.
Things now get a little more technical so for our readers who can stay with us when we get techie, stay on, otherwise you may want to read the CampBisco review.
Being interested in CNC machining, I asked Lindz (Lindsay) if any CNC milling had gone into creating Raffe, with all those customized pieces of steel I had to believe something had been custom milled with a CNC router. Indeed a CNC was used. A CNC’s ability to cut and shape exactly what is on a computer screen, from information coming from CAD rendering and CAM software makes CNC a great option for a robotics project where available.Luckily they had a professional to lend his time, as the skill of the machinist directly correlates to the quality of the piece.
“We have a precision bearing plate that captures the 360 degree pivoting shoulder bearing that we got from Germany. A pivoting bearing was required due to the flexing steel of the beast as he pulls a whole leg into the air and balances for a brief moment on two legs before falling forward as he walks. We knew the machine would flex a LOT, and we needed "precision slop" as I call it, allowing for flex in some planes of movement and not in others.
Here are pictures of the plates that capture the bearing in a ring of seven bolts. These had to be VERY precise. A CNC mill at low RPM drilled the 1/4 inch steel plates and milled out the large holes for the bearing's race to rest against, while leaving the rest of the bearing exposed. The red, rubber rings are the hand made dust seals that keep the grease in the bearings as well.
The math had to be exact for the bolts to rest against the bearing's outer race and hold it in place. Too tight, it won’t go together, too loose, and dangerous slipping about of the bearing could result, and shatter the race. I was amazed at how perfectly the CNC machine created this part. A professional machinist loaned his time to the project for this item.
This item came out flawlessly and is one of the more subtle and clever features that allows the giraffe (a ton of iron) to walk without tearing itself apart. We're pretty proud of it.”
-the plates and bearing attached with the rubber seals.
-picture of the bearings captured by the two plates. The shape of the plates was milled with a CNC as was the large circle in the center. The exposed area shows that cylindrical rollers, rather then ball bearings are used.
The great thing about projects like this is that they can be ongoing, a sponsorship by Kontron has allowed, for Rave to have a giraffe house to shelter him from the elements, he is also receiving a new coat of white paint. His control board will also be modded to look like that of a space shuttle! Raffe's electronics will also undergo and upgrade and reorganization, of the "guts" of the critter. Like so many other things these days such as object oriented programming, and content management systems, Raffes electronics will be modular and for easy removal and upgrades, everything will be fully encased, seperated and organized. This object oriented approach to information, such as dividing up data among clusters of computers like Google does, is fast becoming the way to look at organizing information, weather it be a database or a mess of wires. separating and oraganizing information by type is a must in the petabyte, silicon age.

growing up in NYC I have seen the homeless problem drastically decrease, this gives me hope we can end it forever, this blog will now take the road less traveled and emphasize the cause of Ending Homelessness in NYC. Though most music blogs and generation Y in general is focused on personal and often selfish pursuits, this blog has always been in reaction to those very things and to break out of the institution that blogging is becoming... Media institutions being the very thing that blogs were created as an alternative to.
this from a board member of Metro North "Metro-North has NEVER turned a profit... New cars are on order for 3 years now."
As the rapper Jay Z says, "born in the projects roaches and rats smokers out back, selling their mamma's sofa" well the smokers might have subsided, as the crack epidemic, simmered, but the roaches and rats are still alive and well, in the projects? maybe, but definitely in NYC's mass transit. There are huge rats in the JMZ subway at Canal street to Marcy, but that's expected right? How about on a train to some of the most expensive suburbs in the U.S, thats just Ironic. The Metro North New Haven Line train to and Stamford, has got some of the oldest and run down trains out there. It also has Roaches. I spotted one running around, as it crawled up the legs of a couple cuddling together, I kept my mouth shut like a bad citizen, but a nice girl in front of me told the couple. The guy explaimed "man can't even get on the train no more." I then looked up to see "Roaches" scrawled in marker on the wall. Metro North is pulling in RECORD profits, they can at least buy some decent trains. Lucky for them they have a really nice monopoly going.
The roaches are just one of many problem this socioeconomic, commuter cross section of Metro North riders has to face, as already mentioned, Metro North knows they have a monopoly, riders have no other choice as the rails are the sole means of transportation. It's summer, it's hot, and the last thing people want who have been working all day is to spend an hour in a steaming train car, well that's just what they often get as one out of 10 times there is no air conditioning on the trains whatsoever, the result? Hundreds of sweaty, stinky, hot and angry New Yorkers packed together in 80 degree plus temperature. This can make for a ticking time bomb and I have seen more then a few scuffles and minor fights break out, I have read of even worse. On top of all of this the seats are dirty, the windows filthy, the air filtration chock full of dust particles and a thin film of grime covers much of the surfaces on the New Haven line. At least the train conductors are nice, good people.
The fact that Metro North is a privately held company, coupled with the fact that they have an iron fist monopoly, explains the reason the conditions are so cheap and downright horrible on some lines. They want to make as much money as possible and are doing just that. New trains and service cost Money, something they don't need to spend to keep the record profits flowing.
Dying at the McCarren Park Pool is so hot right now!
A Body was found at McCarrion Park Pool, at 10 a.m. July 16, 2008. The pool once served the surrounding community and was drained to become the newest, most popular and hippest venue in hipster epicenter of Brooklyn NYC
the unidentified body who took a Death Cab for Cuties was found by park workers who told police of "a foul odor coming from a shed at the pool for months." Reportedly they found the body while retrieving equipment from the shed. It's uncertain how long the body has been decomposing for. the night before the body was found a production of Twelve Ophelias, a play centered around Hamlet's Ophelia coming back to life, was staged there; the night before there was a screening of The Virgin Suicides. Multiple calls to the Precinct have gone unanswered, though upon finding the body the park workers asked "could I have his record collection?" The park workers suspected the body had died while still waiting in line to get a beer"
the pool has recently hosted such popular acts as The Brazilian Girls, the Ting Tings, DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist and the Breeders.

In respone to some google queries on "Camp Bisco Violence" I would like to say there is NONE, the bikers keep things in check and are very respectful, as long as you show them the same respect. cause you know its all about respect!
Check this article I wrote on the Camp Bisco Festival Grounds ILC. I was corrected on thisby the bikers, as I know nothing about "colors" or the biker lifestyle, so keep in mind this is just one festival goers view of Indian Lookout Country Club (ILCC).

Marc Brownstein, bass player for the Disco Biscuits, also serves as Co-chair of HeadCount and is heavily involved in the organization’s development.
“It is really exciting to see both HeadCount and Camp Bisco having such growth in a year where other festivals are getting smaller and other voter registration organizations are absent from the process of working the concert scene. We look forward to this being the best year yet for both the festival and for HeadCount.” Marc Brownstein, The Disco Biscuits & HeadCount.

Rothbury 2009 is on ! ending speculation that it would not continue do to Double JJ Ranch being put in financial Jeapordy
Producer Jeremy Stein says "ROTHBURY is proud to host a community of conscious and involved fans who strive for a better future. We're also extremely grateful for the support of our local neighbors and the greater Michigan community. Together - we're raising the bar."
Look for artist line-up announcement and ticket on-sale information coming soon.
bold social and environmental mission continues to manifest in 2009, building on last year's topic of Climate Change and Clean Energy Solutions. Within the festival, look for expanded ROTHBURY Think Tank activities and even more cutting-edge festival implementation of ever-changing technologies in the quest for energy independence. Beyond the festival, via innovative community projects and local partnerships.
Indeed, such unparalleled community support and involvement led to huge successes for ROTHBURY's 2008philanthropic programs and on-site environmental festival initiatives. Such initiatives included ROTHBURY's Music in Schools Program, ROTHBURY's Solar Schools Program, the ROTHBURYFood Drive and The Conscious Alliance Can Sculpture, and ROTHBURY's Greening and Sustainability Initiatives. For details on these 2008 programs visit www.rothburyfestival.com

ROTHBURY is produced by Madison House Presents and AEG Live.
"Info on Rothbury" Rothbury is on private property which dials down the Wannee situation, two people died last year! and still no major investigation. I did hear that the state Police were taking video of the grounds that they were going to use that video for "training" for future fests and how to deal with situations. similar to Live Oak. the police on the other hand at Rothbury seem much more moderate and rational about their use of aggressive force and when to act as the protectors they are really sworn to be. The State police were all over the festival grounds. They drove up and down the camping area aisles with squad cars and this police outfitted golf cart, they walked all over the stage areas. 8 or 9 officers at the John Mayer set were standing in front of the stage right with the crowd. They pretty much had all access to the fest but they were never intimidating and quite frankly were never a bother at all.

Volunteering Info. Ever wanted to go to a festival and not pay the exorbitant ticket fees? ever want to get an inside perspective on how a festival is run? managed? or perhaps you also may care about the earth and be interested in the cutting edge recycling tactics carried out by the green festival movement and organizations like clean vibes. well there are two options for you to get an inside view on these festivals, work with important people and get in free, maybe even get a shiny laminate! you can register with clean vibes and be part of the recycling team,or volunteer, with an organization like Shimon Presents, who runs the street team and volunteer program for many of the top festivals in the nation. the heads of the agencies who's names you will want to know are Seth with Shimon presents and Anna Borofsky with Clean Vibes.
In this internet age, the term "grass roots organizing" has taken on a much more of a powerful and cutting edge meaning. Through the internet as well as the effort of large numbers of like minded people, a tremendous amount can be accomplished. We have this in grass roots campaign organizing and Shimon Presents uses this toward creating a successful marketing strategy in the fast paced business of music. Shimon Presents uses the allure of the music industry as well as some free perks and incentives to motivate there massive database of dedicated fans. These fans put up posters, hand out flyers and inevitably complete successful marketing campaigns which has grown Shimon Presents client roster throughout the years. All through valuable "feet on the street" marketing with little cost to the company. The "street team" as they are reffed are fans of music who work diligently to promote these bands and document their efforts through photographing their work as they go along, Thus earning rewards ranging from CDS to passes to expensive week long festivals. In turn, Shimon Presents shows these pictures to clients as proof of their effectiveness. I have watched over the years as so many band sand event that Shimon Presents has been affiliated with has turned to gold and realize it is through their propper use of grass roots organizing as well as creative use of tools such as the internet, that they were able to accomplish so much. Shimon Presents has an extensive database where it tracks its volunteers, logs their work and also sends email update. Virtually all communication is done via email and through their online forms which allows them to manage large numbers of grass roots organizers and lightens the work load on the Shimon Presents office, by having the volunteers do much of the data entry themselves. In a world when innovative solutions are needed to adapt to the changing times Shimon Presents is a model of a successful marketing practice, that implements, grass roots organizing and internet web 2.0 technology.Line ups for Shimon Presents events include just about every major band popular right now, REM, The Beastie Boys, 311, The Roots, Snoop Dogg, MSTRKRFT, WideSpread Panic, Dave Mathews Band, Tori Amos ect. in addition to living legends such as James Brown, The Wailers and Taj Mahal.
Here is some information from Anna Borofsky head of the revolutionary recycling and sustainability project Clean Vibes, help her out this year she needs volunteers! and it is a worthwhile experience for college age post college age, people with wanderlust.
2009 marks the 10th anniversary of Clean Vibes as its own company! As we celebrate a decade of event recycling, we have already been very busy gearing up for what appears to be the busiest Clean Vibes season to date. Lots of new festivals are making a commitment to reduce their footprint and want to work with us to ensure that they are walking the sustainable walk, not just talking the talk.
Some very exciting news for our 10th year as well – we have just launched our brand new and long overdue website!!! The site has been completely redesigned and has a long overdue update to all of the content of the site. So head on over to cleanvibes.com and check it out! Clean Vibes has come a long way in the last 10 years, and it is pretty amazing to see just how many events we have worked, and what an enormous impact our recycling efforts at all of these events have had on the Earth. Every single one of you that has worked or volunteered with us before should take great pride in all that the website, and the company as a whole, represents. We can’t wait to continue to help keep the scene clean and spread the clean vibe in 2009!
All that being said, we are now accepting applications for the 2009 season. The new applications can be downloaded from our website at: http://cleanvibes.com/vibes_jobs.cfm
Please be sure to read the descriptions of the positions carefully. Also, as always, all applicants have the option of submitting an audio version of the narrative section of the application in case you feel more comfortable speaking your answers than writing them.
**If you are only interested in volunteering with Clean Vibes this year, and you are receiving this email, you do NOT need to reapply as you have already been accepted within our volunteer database. If you want to volunteer with us at Bonnaroo, you can go ahead and sign up in the database now. Several other shows will be added to the database for sign up within the next few months.
If you have any questions, please email me at annab@cleanvibes.com Please read through all of the information on the Employment page of the website carefully before emailing with questions.
Thanks for all of your hard work and positive energy over the years – we hope to see you again this season!
