The Heavy Pets are Breaking Boundaries

If you don’t already know about Florida based jam pop up-and-comers The Heavy Pets, you should. For the past four years they have taken part in the incessant touring and festival routing that is key to any jam band’s success, including regular stops at Bonnaroo, All Good, moe.down, and Langerado. They have even seen the blossoming of their own festival, PetZoo. Now in it’s third year, the festival was held in freehold, NJ with a stellar lineup that included Umelt, The Brew, John Brown’s Body, and Toubab Krewe.

Although being best know for their passionate live performances, the May release of their first self-titled full length studio album exemplifies their potential to cross over into the mainstream. The album beautifully fuses their jam rock roots of blues, jazz, funk, and reggae with pop melodies, danceable backbeats, and poignant lyrics.

The band will be coming through the Northeast this fall and will be here in New York City at Sullivan Hall next Thursday, September 11. They will be joined by roots rock jammers Dangermuffin and some other great openers, so come on out early for a full night of fun. Don’t miss the opportunity to say you saw this band before they blew up.

Tuesday

Theiving Irons @Union Hall

The steel pedal player looks just like a member of New Riders of the Purple Sage, thank god the Dead are once again Hip! Before everyone wanted to be indie, now people are so sick of that they are starting to rediscover the great music from the 60's once again and America's folk roots.

Nate Martinez, the Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter-guitarist (formerly of buzz-band Pela), recently announced his new project Thieving Irons. The band’s first album, This Midnight Hum, will be released on Martinez’s own Seabird Recordings on August 24. The band will follow up the release with a tour of select U.S. cities in August and September, the first of which are listed below.

Martinez was intimately involved in every aspect of This Midnight Hum: as writer, performer, co-producer (with Mike Brown) and mixer (with Jim Smith at Saltlands Studio). He brought the tracks to life in collaboration with various friends and compatriots, including Bryan Devendorf of The National on drums, Dan Brantigan on trumpet, and Mike Brown on a variety of instruments. Martinez takes the reins on vocals and lead guitar as well as contributing many other instrumental parts. The compositions on the album have a distinctly American flavor that reveals the influence of classic troubadours like Tom Petty & Lindsay Buckingham.

This Midnight Hum is the first album by a member of Pela since the band’s demise. Pela were named Artists to Watch by Rolling Stone after the release of their full length, “Anytown Graffiti,” which made many critics’ Best of 2007 lists. The New York Times praised the album for “wide-open skies of bouncy, Pixiesesque basslines and sharp, sparkling guitars.”

The National Prospect Park /The Rock Shop Park Slope

I went with my friend to go check out who I thought was the Black Keys at Prospect Park Bandshell, we listened to the music, it didn't sound like what I expected but sometimes I am so far removed from anything outside the jamband scene I figured it was them. Later on after some jamming I decided I wanted to check out this new venue in our neighborhood called The Rock Shop. I was really impressed with the place, there was a complete backline, amazing PA and soundboard, an upstairs and fancy deck. Definitely not the type of place you would expect from 4th avenue, but the neighborhood is up and coming so they say. The bar tender told us very excitedly that The National was upstairs hanging out. We thought little of it as neither me nor my friend had really heard much of their stuff. It wasn't untill an hour later I realized the band we were just listening to was this band chilling at the Rock Shop. The place is tons of fun, and the Black Keys play Summer Stage tomorrow.
